Cheap Stays In Fancy Locations

Buenos Aires Obelisk

Budget travel is always a compromise between where you'd love to go and where you can actually afford. However, many seriously exciting destinations that you may have discounted on price grounds, do actually have accommodation that's within reach of most people; especially if you're happy to share a dorm. It just takes a little research...

Nice, France

The Riviera is a fantastic place to visit at almost any time of year, with cheaper prices and milder weather from September to spring. If you think the cost of a room will be prohibitive, think again! The Villa Saint Exupery is a short hop from the beach and the centre, and dorm rooms are available for well under $25. You may not save enough to visit the casino at Monte Carlo. There's a busy bar and common room, and private rooms are also available.

Cape Town, South Africa

One of the beauties of Cape Town is that it's the end point for many pan-African trips, meaning you can spend long evenings swapping stories and tips from the road with like-minded people. Again, dorms can be booked for under $25 a night at many hostels, including the highly-regarded Atlantic Point on Cavalcade Road. Women-only dorms are available as are private rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Each room is uniquely decorated, and it's just 10 minutes walk from the bustling Waterfront complex.

New Orleans, USA

The party literally never stops in NOLA; walk down Bourbon Street at 9am on a Monday morning in February, and you'll see what we mean. While dorm rooms are priced at under $20 if you're happy to stay just outside the centre, $25 will get you a bed at the Auberge Nouvelle, just a block from where the Mardi Gras parades run. It's a new. clean hostel in a traditional building, and it's close to several 24 hour bars and restaurants.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

The start (or finish) point for a thousand South American adventures, BA has an electric atmosphere and it's a carnivore's paradise. Navigation is easy - the Obelisk is effectively the centre, situated on the massively wide main drag. At the Play Hostel in the popular Palermo district, you can expect to pay under $30 for a private room with bathroom, but a dorm bed will cost under $20. The hostel is situated in a beautiful old house with a charming patio area and a fully equipped kitchen - though the variety and quality of restaurants in the city may mean you'll rarely use it!
